Some games have hacking or programming mini-games, and there are a couple of ones where programming is the game. But Screeps is the first game I’ve seen that requires knowledge and even expertise of JavaScript. Launched last May, Screeps is a real-time strategy game where you grow a military colony using JavaScript (or a programming language that can be compiled to JavaScript).

Pokémon are elusive creatures. If you want to catch them all, you better bring an army. That must be their thinking on Twitch.tv, where right now more than 75,000 people are in a chatroom controlling a single game the Game Boy version of Pokémon Red.

Video games have been made to cover just about every genre you can think of. A new video game has surfaced on Kickstarter that covers one unusual genre that I’ve never thought about. This MMORPG has nothing to do with exploring dungeons or killing fellow players –  Ever, Jane promises to bring players into the virtual world of Jane Austen.

If you’re a fan of the MMO video game series World of Warcraft, you may have been interested a few weeks back when I mentioned that actor Colin Farrell had been tipped to play the lead in the film.

Colin Farrell has been in a number of movies, one of the most recent being the Total Recall remake that didn’t totally suck. Farrell is reportedly up for the lead role in a movie based on a video game, and an incredibly popular video game at that.

MMOs, everyone is playing them. And now fans of the LEGO video games will soon have their own. A massively-multiplayer online game that’s all LEGO.

I wouldn’t be surprised if millions of Pokémon fans have been wishing for years for a MMO version of their beloved game. Nintendo may soon have more reason to consider making such a game. And I’m not talking about the impending release of World of Warcraft’s Mists of Pandaria expansion and its Pet Battle System.

There’ve been rumblings in the gaming world for a while now that the popular Elder Scrolls franchise was going online. Zenimax Online Studios has now announced the MMORPG officially. The game is called The Elder Scrolls Online.

EA and Bioware are truly using the force, since Star Wars: The Old Republic has already passed the 1 million mark, according to a press release issued by both companies. They claim that it’s the fastest MMO ever to reach the number.

The time has finally come to choose either the light side or the dark side. Today is the day that Star Wars fans have been waiting for, with the launch of the new Star Wars: The Old Republic game.

Those of you who have been patiently waiting for Star Wars: The Old Republic, here’s some good news. It looks like the game will have its early access date start sooner than expected.

We have about a month left before Battlefield 3 launches and now we are seeing reports that suggest that pre-orders have already exceeded 1.5 million copies. This makes the new Battlefield 3 game one of the biggest games of the year already.

To celebrate the 17th anniversary of the 3DO, Panasonic is getting back into the video game business. Just kidding about the 3DO part, but who knows. What’s true is that the company is working on Panasonic Cloud Entertainment, a platform with an emphasis on online gaming and cloud-based media.

Gazillion Entertainment is developing an MMO featuring popular characters from the Marvel Universe, and it’s looking really cute. Really really really cute. So cute that older fans of the House of Ideas may find it repulsive.

It looks like South Koreans won’t be able to play video games during the wee hours of the night. There is going to be an enforced ban, which will start at midnight. The South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has decided that gaming addiction has gotten to epic levels, so they will be enforcing a ban on online gamers, especially MMOs.

NASA wants to put you in space–sort of–and they’re willing to build an MMO to prove it. With Astronaut: Mars, Moon and Beyond, the folks behind the American space program hope to produce a game that will be to space what America’s Army was to, uh… American’s actual Army.
