Want to draw attention to your ears? Just add one of these glass octopus tentacles crafted by Japanese glass artist Genki Hirano. The tentacles, created for a sea life-themed design festival, are sure to be a conversation piece.

Researchers from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech (my alma mater!), led by Assistant Professor Michael Bartlett, have developed the Octa-Glove, a glove with octopus-like suckers on the fingers designed for firmly grasping objects underwater without requiring grip strength.

A team of researchers at Harvard have developed Octobot, what they claim is the first autonomous soft robot with no rigid components. That means it’s all soft and squishy (and creepy.) The octopus-shaped robot has a silicone body and uses a 50% hydrogen peroxide fuel that flows through a microfluidic circuit where it reacts with platinum.

Here’s something that’s truly amazing and hypnotizing to watch. Kite fanatic Erich Chew captured this footage of a massive octopus swimming through the air at the Marina Barrage in Singapore earlier this month. Either that, or it’s a drill from Cthulhu and his minions finally attack our reality.

Well, it looks like the creatures of the sea aren’t safe from robots taking their jobs either. Researchers in Italy are constructing a multi-armed soft robot that functions both in and out of water. That way we landlubbers can be creeped out by it too.

I’m not a big fan of the Texas gulf coast, which is the closest beach to where I live. The water is not clear at all, which means Jaws could set upon you at any time with no warning.

I’ve always loved the notion of Octodad. The idea that an octopus could dress up in a three-piece suit and just carry on among humans as if nothing was out of the ordinary is pretty hilarious.
