Research in Motion today announced their latest smartphone model, the BlackBerry 8800. The new model adds numerous features including GPS tracking, expandable memory, and a long-lasting battery. The 8800 is a full quad-band GSM/EDGE phone, and lifts many of the features found in the popular BlackBerry Pearl model, such as its well-received trackball navigation.

Seems like every few days another mobile phone vendor tries to steal some thunder from Apple’s much anticipated iPhone. Samsung has now thrown their hat into the ring by throwing down with their own widescreen, touch-sensitive media phone.

Kyocera’s new W51K takes on the mobile phone market with the philosophy that “more is better.” As a matter of fact, it’s almost like the phone is an afterthought. The W51K crams in a plethora of multimedia functions including an MP3 player, video player, FM tuner, 2MP digital camera and even a TV tuner with an EPG program guide.

This cool phone from Asus channels many of its good looks from Apple’s iPhone. The Asus Aura has a 3.9-inch touchscreen LCD, a 2 megapixel digital camera and a slim 6.9mm thick case design. The Aura does one up the iPhone in a few significant ways by offering UMTS and HSDPA (3G) high-speed connectivity, expandable storage via an SD slot and a slide-out keyboard.

In their never-ending quest to create solutions to a problems that don’t exist, NTT Docomo and Sony Ericsson have developed a new line of scented cell phones. Yeah, you heard that right. The SO703i Sony Bravia Aroma Phone will offer a variety of interchangeable aroma “sheets” that will keep your phone smelling fresh as the day you bought it.

One of the biggest problems with touchscreen interfaces is the lack of any sort of tactile feedback. In response to this concern, Samsung has released a touchscreen phone with Immersion’s VibeTonz haptic feedback system. The Samsung SCH-W559 phone provides users with a vibration that approximates the sensation of a key click when they interact with the phone’s touchscreen.

While many of us were pretty wowed by the industrial design and user interface of Apple’s forthcoming iPhone, but with a bunch of other internet-media-smartphones out there, is it really all that unique? LG would like us to think that Apple’s beauty really isn’t all that different.

The new Kensington Vo300 USB Internet Speakerphone allows you to make Skype VOIP phone calls from your desktop using the familiar interface of a regular desktop speakerphone. The phone features a standard telephone keypad and volume controls, as well as an integrated LCD that lets you control Skype without looking at your computer screen at all.

The new Sony “Mylo” media player supports MPEG-4 video, audio and photos. It also has a built-in wireless connection that supports wireless music streaming to other mylo players and it works as a wireless Skype phone.
