When I was much younger, my mom gave me a tin can with a coin slot on top. She instructed me to drop any spare change I had to save up for a rainy day. I examined the can up close and saw that it was actually a free piggy bank tin that was being given away by a local bank.

Novelty items for DSLR fans are fast becoming popular. There’s the famous lens mug, the lens pillow, lens bracelet and there’s a camera-shaped speaker. There was even a Canon 7D piggy bank. Now there’s another piggy bank designed for DSLR devotees – this time of the Canon EOS 350D.

Ah, if there’s one thing we can rely on Brando for, it’s unusual stuff. One of the latest additions to the Hong Kong importer’s online emporium of wacky gadgets and geekery is this thing:

We’ve featured a lot of piggy banks and other coin storage devices over the years, but I think this one is the most high-tech yet. The Personal ATM works a lot like actual ATMs, but not only can you deposit money in it, you can also set a target date or a target amount of money so you can monitor (and agonize) how long you have to wait before you should withdraw or how much you still have to save.

This concept piggy bank is more like a combination of an ATM and a Tamagotchi. In order to keep it happy, you have to feed it your credit card. No money, and it gets sad. Designed by Wang Chao, Maggie Kuo, and Jordi Parra, the electronic piggy bank concept has an iPhone for its screen that displays the emotions of the piggy bank, while an Arduino detects and manages the money and transmits status back to a computer via Bluetooth, which in turn notifies the iPhone over WiFi.

The Choken-Bako dog bank features a hyperactive dog for a teller. Just place your money on its bowl and it will “eat” it. Actually there’s a slot on the bowl that’s connected to the coin box; the dog’s mouth just pushes the money into the slot.

Another fun creation from the guys over at Fred & Friends, this new piggy bank has a built-in gauge to tell you how close to full it is. The Fill ‘Er Up savings bank looks just like the gas gauge on a car, but instead of keeping track of fuel, it keeps track of coins.

Space Invaders fans, here’s a fun way to save your spare change – if you happen to live in Japan, that is. This Space Invaders piggy bank looks just like a miniature cocktail table version of the classic arcade shooter.
