Over a year ago, Russian scientists operating the RATAN-600 radio telescope discovered a very strong deep space signal. But they kept their discovery from the rest of the world until now. The story broke after journalist Paul Gilster laid hands on a research paper announcing the discovery of a “strong signal in the direction of HD164595.”

This is just wild to me. I mentioned way back in August that SETI had raised the money needed to continue operating. Generally, they search the heavens for proof of an alien life by picking up radio signals.

If you follow space exploration, you probably know about the long running SETI project that uses the Allen Telescope Array to search the skies for radio signals from distant planets. Back in April, the government cut the funding for SETI out and the project went offline for the first time.
