Spotted at SIGGRAPH 2010, this interactive art display might just look like a pile of sand, but stick your hands in it, and a variety of creepy crawly insects come to life. Thankfully, these nasty many-legged creatures aren’t real.

The other day, I showed you guys what I thought was some really impressive computer generated facial animation. Then, the guys over at Image Metrics sent me a video clip of their latest CG creation, Emily, and I was bowled over.

At the recent SIGGRAPH 2007 conference, a team of engineers from USC showed off a display system that’s capable of projecting interactive 360-degree viewable images produced by a computer. By using a high-speed video projector, a spinning platform with a holographic diffuser and special decoding hardware, the display can crank out up to 5,000 real-time images per second.
