I’ve tried my hand at various voice assisted devices over the years. Things like Ford’s Sync platform, Siri, and others. Early voice assistant devices like the Ford Sync system in the 2010 Mustang I owned were pretty stupid when it came to recognizing my slight southern accent.

These days, there are plenty of Bluetooth speakers available, and you no longer have to pay hundreds of dollars to get something decent that sounds good. If you’re looking for a small, but feature-packed speaker, you might want to check out the Boombot REX.

Viper is one of the better-know automotive accessory companies out there when it comes to keyless entry systems, remote starting systems, and car alarms. One of the coolest products the company offers is its Viper SmartStart system that uses your smartphone as the controller.

Apple has not made their virtual assistant Siri available outside of the iPhone 4S – not on the new Apple TV, not even on the new iPad. But the jailbreak community thinks differently and has come up with a way for older Apple devices to use Siri thanks to two apps: Spire and i4Siri.

Sure, Siri can be bossy or frustrating at times, but it’s certain that she’s safe to stay in iOS 6  (and probably iPad 3 and the iTV, too.) In tribute to the digital personal assistant, 3D printing company Shapeways has assembled a group of artists to shed new light on Siri and her impact in our lives.

People who have the iPhone 4S have been singing praises for Siri, the virtual personal assistant that can do a whole lot of stuff by following the user’s voice commands.

When hackers started to port Siri to other iPhone models, we wished Apple would just step up and make that an official feature in the latest version of the OS. Apple has now made it much more possible to port Siri to devices other than the iPhone 4S with the iOS 5.0.1 update – whether they intended to or not.

While a version of iOS 5 is available for other iOS devices aside from the iPhone 4S, only Apple’s latest phone can run Siri, the much-hyped virtual assistant. Officially, that is. A trio of developers have conclusively proved that older hardware can handle Siri, in this case the iPhone 3GS.

If you are an iPhone 4 user and the only thing from the new iPhone 4S you are sad to be missing is Siri, check this out. A pair of hackers claims to have made a fully functional port of Siri to the iPhone 4S.

Siri can trade jokes and witty banter with you and even serve you beer, but programmer Christopher Deutsch aka CDeutsch has come up with a more practical application for the virtual assistant. Using the help of a few store-bought gadgets and Siri’s other digital buddies, Christoper Deutsch (aka “CDeutsch”) was able to create a voice-controlled home automation system.

I can remember being freaked out by HAL 9000 when I was a kid. The thought of a computer that could think and try to kill you was pretty creepy. The main things I recall from the flick were that HAL said “Dave” a lot and had a glowing red eye that just glared at the screen when he spoke.

Apple’s Siri voice assistant is quite clever and very accommodating, but it can’t make things happen in the real world. Not yet anyway. But when combined with Arduino, it’s capable of just about anything. Like controlling a beer-serving robot.

A lot of people were disappointed when October 4 came and went without the announcement of the iPhone 5. What was unveiled instead was the iPhone 4S, that’s going to be shipping out starting today. While the device might look a lot like the iPhone 4, most similarities end there.
