Anyone on a slower broadband connection like I am, or heaven forbid on a dial-up connection, knows that modern websites assume you have a decent amount of bandwidth. Downloading all those photos and videos can take ages on a slow connection and Facebook knows the lack of bandwidth is one of the reasons people in some parts the world don’t join the network.

I would imagine the people at Facebook weren’t happy when users of the social network began uploading huge amounts of photos using Instagram. Eventually, they gave in and bought Instagram outright for $1 billion to turn a competitor into an asset.

Before Facebook introduced the Timeline, every user had a Wall on their profiles where other users could leave messages or write down comments. A lot of people are crazy over Facebook- some figuratively, others literally – so it makes sense that the social network has spawned a lot of related sites, services, and phenomena.

Parents worry a lot when their kids spend a lot of time on Facebook. There are online predators, scammers, and people who might be just out to hurt your kids. Granted, these kind of people aren’t just on Facebook; they’re actually all over the web.

The Slingplayer is a very cool way to watch all the content from your local TV stations and networks no matter where you are. Slingbox and Slingplayer work together to place-shift your DVR content to you via the web from anywhere with a connection.

The Tomodachi Block system is an interesting concept that allows you to stay connected with friends by using wooden blocks that act as tiny wooden displays. Remember the intro to the Brady Bunch where they are all in a grid and yet are seemingly interacting with each other?

Glassboard is a new mobile social network app made by Sepia Labs, and was built with control and privacy in mind. Glassboard has simple and sensible rules: only the person who created the “board” – think yahoogroups or Circles in Google+ – can invite or remove members as well as delete the whole board.

I have a lot of friends who are smokers trying to quit. And it was through them that I first heard of the electronic cigarette. I thought that it was a pretty cool innovation back then and I still do today.

The webcomic xkcd has just released a new version of the map of online communities. The word is that Farmville is taking over more and more of the world. Well, maybe not, but seriously, Facebook is taking up a lot of space.

UK Design firms Industrial Facility and luckybite recently teamed up with Panasonic Japan’s Chief mobile device designer Madori Kuroda to create this prototype digital camera specifically catering to online social networking. The Panasonic Pixi was designed for use with Mixi, which is Japan’s closest equivalent to MySpace.
