A couple of years ago, we featured the Pixy, a compact image sensor that can tag hundreds of objects based on their color. Electronics company RobotGeek combined Pixy with a couple of its robot kits to create a small turret that automatically follows and shoots at its targets.
The first time we featured Instructables member Yvo de Haas aka Dragonator, we checked out his GLaDOS lamp. Now he’s back with another Portal-themed creation, a life-sized replica of the game’s robotic turret. It has moveable parts, emits lights and sound effects and can even track a moving target.
Valve has a life-size model of the Sentry Gun from Team Fortress 2 to guard their office. Programmer and 3D artist Jeff Wong may not be a big shot like Gabe Newell and his employees, but he has a turret manning his house too.
If you’re a fan of the video game Portal 2, ThinkGeek has a new USB powered toy just in time for the holiday shopping season that you will love. The USB gadget is called the Portal 2 Sentry Turret USB Desk Defender.
We finally have more details on the extremely faithful Portal turret replica that Valve showed off last week. It turns out that it was commissioned by Valve from Weta Workshop, the award-winning special effects, design and prop makers known for their work in The Lord of the Rings.
…by different I mean it looks exactly the same as the famous robot from Portal 2. An achingly short video of the replica was posted at Valve’s Facebook account, with no further details provided other than an acknowledgement from the Valve Store Facebook account, which said “Hello friend.”
Sure, we’ve seen the odd Portal turret here and there, but this one actually shoots. It was created by a Penn State University student for his Advanced Mechatronics class’ final project. Just like in the game, it tracks its victims using a camera and shoots at them.
I bet more than a few of you are fans of the game Portal and Portal 2. Besides GLaDOS, the Companion Cube, Wheatley and Cave Johnson, one of the most memorable things Chell had to deal with are those pesky turrets lying around the environment.
If you are a fan of the Portal series, you will be very familiar with the turrets that hang around trying to kill you. ThinkGeek has a new plush turret that talks to you and looks like the real thing – if it were soft and squishy.
This amazingly deadly robot was built by Robert Beatty and his daughters. Note to all of his daughter’s future suitors… Run! This thing is called Mechatron. It sports mecanum wheels and has a deadly electric gun mounted on top.
