Uber, the mobile app-based taxi service, is investing a lot in developing autonomous cars to replace or augment human drivers with robots. But that technology isn’t in place yet, so they are looking at robots that can act as security guards in the meantime.

Ryan Simonetti and three of his coworkers hailed a ride using the Uber app. When the ride showed up and the men entered the car, a D.C. taxi inspector was talking to the driver. Simonetti says that as the inspector walked off to check documents, the Uber driver just drove off with the passengers inside.

If you grew up in the 80’s or have watched the Transformers movies you know who Optimus Prime is – the 18-wheeler Autobot and leader of the good guys. If you have the Uber app installed on your phone, you have a chance to hail Optimus Prime to come to your location in certain areas.

When my kids were small enough that they had to be in car seats or boosters, we never went anywhere that we didn’t have our car or a seat for them. I never really thought about what you do when traveling with small kids that need a car seat and your only transportation is a taxi or car you hire.
