Brilliant Labs’ Frame, AI-Powered Eye Glasses

With over 17 years of writing experience, Jonathan has had a passion for all things tech-related, ever since watching Inspector Gadget as a child. He's disassembled countless appliances and managed to put a few back together, and one still works. When not writing, he can often be found playing video games or accidentally hurting himself in the garage.

Powered by OpenAI, Frame glasses from Brilliant Labs bring the power of artificial intelligence directly to your eyeballs, with information appearing on the lens in front of you as you view your environment. They’re the future of seeing! Well, provided they catch on. Otherwise, we might just have to deal with our regular old eyes for a while longer.

The augmented reality glasses have OLED displays in the lenses and can provide information on the fly, including visual recognition of objects and providing their description, translations of foreign languages, AI web searches based on viewed imagery, and even AI image generation (in the video, “Show me what my sofa would look like another color”). Will they be as powerful and helpful as they’re being marketed? That remains to be seen, but I’ll wait until early adopters have them and post reviews to make my purchase decision. I’ve invested in more than my fair share of vaporware already.

The glasses start at $349 for non-prescription lenses ($449 with prescription) and are entirely open source, so programmers and engineers can develop their own AI apps. Will somebody make one that replaces the eyes of everyone you see with googly eyes? One can hope! Otherwise, what’s the purpose of this technology?
