Building A Drivable Wooden Mercedes AMG G63 Wagon

With over 17 years of writing experience, Jonathan has had a passion for all things tech-related, ever since watching Inspector Gadget as a child. He's disassembled countless appliances and managed to put a few back together, and one still works. When not writing, he can often be found playing video games or accidentally hurting himself in the garage.

Because everybody’s automotive dream is different (I want a jet car), Youtuber ND Woodworking Art spent six months building himself a Mercedes AMG G63 wagon look-alike with a wood interior (including dash and chairs) and exterior. What a thing of beauty! Just don’t get caught out in the rain.

The SUV’s chassis is actually that of a Mitsubishi Pajero (the Montero in North American markets), onto which a custom-made G63 body frame was welded and all the wooden panels attached. The builder kept everything necessary to power the vehicle was kept intact, so it still drives, which, as far as cars are concerned, is one of their most important features. That, and looking cool.

I wonder what the weight difference is between a wooden car and a traditional model. Also, I can’t imagine a wooden vehicle passing safety tests when everything splinters instead of crumpling. My car doesn’t even crumple; pieces just fall off, sometimes completely unprovoked. It’s what anybody but the guy who sold it to me would call a lemon.
