Today’s world has danger lurking around every corner. We’re not talking about the stories you see on the news, either. These are everyday issues that most people do not realize. It’s important to be on the lookout for the little things you should take seriously. Believe it or not, these unassuming problems can lead to serious health issues.
Here are 15 things that can be dangerous despite people taking them too lightly.
Stress
It’s easy to shake stress off as nothing important, but too much stress can cause serious health problems. It can lead to issues with your mental and physical health.
The Mayo Clinic has a list of common side effects, mentioning that it can lead to anxiety, headaches, muscle tension, chest pain, or even substance abuse. They list some easy things to do that can help alleviate stress:
- Get regular physical activity on most days of the week.
- Keep a sense of humor.
- Spend time with family and friends.
- Set aside time for hobbies.
- Get enough sleep.
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Household Cleaning Products
If you’re like me, you’ve probably commented on the smell of the cleaning products you use at home. There’s a reason why they smell bad: they’re filled with chemicals that can be toxic. Make sure you wear those rubber gloves!
Compressed Air
Fun fact. When I worked at GameStop, you had to be over 18 to buy cans of compressed air. They’re intended to clean dust, but people use them for other intentions that can be dangerous.
Revealing Personal Information
Some people live chronically online. As a result, they overshare personal information that scammers can quickly get a hold of.
Infections
Don’t shrug off an infection as fine. That minor issue can become serious overnight. Always seek out proper medical care.
Trampolines
While many view a trampoline as a source of amusement, it can also be a gigantic injury hazard. Every year, there are countless tales of people being too reckless and seriously hurting themselves while playing on a trampoline.
Water On The Road
It’s generally a good idea to avoid large puddles on the road. Sure, you may be able to drive through it, but the risk isn’t worth it. You’re more likely to deal severe damage to your car.
Not Respecting Animals In Nature
No matter how cute they look, wild animals are wild animals. The bigger they are, the more they’ll mess you up. Don’t tempt fate with a bear or a bison in the wild.
Driving After Drinking At The Bar
A shocking amount of people take driving after having a drink or two too casually. While it’s important to know how much you can handle, the growth of ride-sharing has made it easier than ever to avoid drinking and driving.
Sunburns
Everybody loves to work in their tan at the beach. Without proper care, though, it’s easy for that tan to become a sunburn. Even worse is when that turns into skin cancer, which is what killed famed singer Jimmy Buffett.
The Weather
Mother Nature doesn’t mess around. Just because you’re feeling warm and toasty in your winter coat doesn’t mean it isn’t cold outside. It’s important always to take the proper precautions to survive the elements.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
The gas has no taste, odor, or color. It can be a silent killer, so it’s important to ensure you’re properly protected. Make sure your alarms are working properly.
Remember, the Poison Control Center can be reached at 1-800-222-1222 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Cooking With Hot Oil
Home kitchens lack some of the safety precautions that restaurant kitchens do. That means certain styles of hooking are far more dangerous at home, especially cooking or frying with hot oil. Make sure you don’t overfill the pot when frying, and remember that water is not used to put out a grease fire; use baking soda instead.
Antibiotic Resistance
According to the World Health Organization, “Antibiotic resistance – when bacteria change so antibiotics no longer work in people who need them to treat infections – is now a major threat to public health.”
“Without urgent, coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill,” says Dr Keiji Fukuda, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Health Security.
Sleep Deprivation
It’s important to ensure you get your recommended sleep every night. That way, your body feels rested and recharged. Yet too many people don’t get enough sleep and rely on caffeine to make it through the day.
