Electroplating A 3D-Printed Iron Man Helmet To Make It Look Like The One From The Movies

Extruded 3D-printed plastics typically have a dull, lined finish that leaves something to be desired in the wow department. So, after 3D printing an Iron Man helmet, Youtuber HEN3DRIK decided to take it to the next level by electroplating it with real copper, gold, and palladium to look more like the one seen in the movies.

First, HEN3DRIK 3D prints all the individual helmet pieces and sands them smooth before applying multiple layers of spray filler and sanding them as finely as possible. Then, he applies a layer of conductive copper paint with an airbrush so the electroplating will have something suitable to adhere to. Apparently, gum is not the answer.

Finally, he electroplates the pieces by placing them in an acid bath, positively charging the donor copper, and negatively charging the mask so that the ions are deposited onto it as the acid dissolves the metal sheets. He then repeatedly polishes all the parts before applying additional gold and palladium electroplating by hand and airbrushing a coat of translucent red. The result? One VERY shiny Iron Mask. One I would be happy to glue to my head this Halloween if HEN3DRIK would just let me borrow it for a night.
