2. SAUSAGE PARTY (2016)
This animated dark comedy film follows a talking sausage in the grocery store who, along with the other food items, can hardly wait to be purchased and brought home with a customer. But when the sausage learns that customers buy the food to eat it, he becomes terrified. Together, the tasty, talking characters devise a plan to escape the mouths of their killers.
3. FROG DREAMING (1986)
Frog Dreaming, also known as The Quest, is an Australian family adventure film that explores Aboriginal myths. When a young boy stumbles upon a strange frog-like creature while adventuring in the wild beyond his yard, he embarks on a dreamlike journey through myth and legend.
4. MONKEYBONE (2001)
After a famous comic book artist is gravely injured in a car accident, he’s sent to limbo, which looks like an eerie carnival filled with his wildest imaginations. Monkeybone, the titular character of his famous comics, greets the artist when he arrives, and the two immediately clash. But can Monkeybone help his artist escape limbo and make it out alive?
5. VELOCIPASTOR (2018)
VelociPastor is a ridiculous supernatural action comedy film about a priest who travels to China while grieving his dead parents. While abroad, he gains the power to transform into a dinosaur. At first, the priest is horrified by his new abilities. But a few helpful women convince him to use his superpower for good.
6. MIRRORMASK (2005)
This dark fantasy film follows a teenage girl whose parents own a circus. Tired of the carny lifestyle, the teen erupts angrily at her mother and wishes her dead. But when her wish begins to come true, the only way the teen can save her mom is by descending into a strange and terrifying fantasy realm.
7. RUBBER (2010)
When a tire inexplicably gains sentience in the middle of the desert, it learns that it also has the power to control its surroundings with its mind. As it tests its abilities, it becomes hungry for power and goes on a killer rampage across the West.
8. AFTER HOURS (1985)
After Hours is a bizarre romance adventure film about a man who meets an intelligent woman in a cafe before she invites him over to her place. He travels to her apartment in a cab, but things begin to go wrong when his only money flies away out the open window. This event sets the man off on a wild adventure with strange twists no one could expect.
9. I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (2020)
This surrealist horror film follows a young woman who wants to break up with her boyfriend but hasn’t had the courage or timing to do it yet. As she and her boyfriend drive to visit his parents, they talk about life, philosophy, and their relationship. But when they arrive at the parents’ house, the audience realizes nothing is as it seems.
10. ERASERHEAD (1977)
In a vague dystopian land, a man has a one-night stand with a woman who gets pregnant. The man and woman marry to care for their unexpected child. The pregnancy seems normal enough until the woman gives birth to a lizard creature.
11. SWISS ARMY MAN (2016)
Finding himself stranded alone on a deserted island, a man loses hope and plans to take his own life. But when he spots a dead body nearby, he finds a way to use the body to help him escape. Over time, the body begins to speak to the man as he tries his best to get back home.
12. THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973)
This surreal Mexican film follows an unnamed thief who embarks on a strange and epic journey. Along the way, he meets mythic, archetypal characters like an alchemist and each of the seven planets. Throughout the film, the characters transform themselves and their environment to find what they seek.
13. MANDY (2018)
A solitary couple lives a peaceful life away from society in this action-packed surreal horror film. But everything changes one day when a cult leader abducts the woman while she’s on her way to work. After that, the couple is plunged into a terrifying yet fantastical journey to escape the darkness.
14. BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW (2010)
When a scientist in charge of an experimental psychological fantasy experience traps a young girl in the basement of his facility, he trains her to use telepathy for his sinister purposes. But he doesn’t know the girl is intent on finding some way to escape her dreadful captivity. Can she find a way out before he uses her as a pawn in his most extensive plans yet?
15. AFTER BLUE (2021)
This French sci-fi horror film takes place on a planet whose atmosphere killed off all men after humans settled there. The film begins when a teenage girl happens upon a beautiful woman’s head sticking out of the sand, begging for freedom. After releasing the woman, the girl learns that she is a terrible outlaw, and she and her mother must track the outlaw down to get her back in prison.
