We all have certain romantic lines we’ll never forget in movies, especially if they resonate with what we’ve experienced or want to experience. With that said, here are some of the more famous and heartfelt ones that we can’t stop thinking about long after the screen goes dark. Naturally, this contains spoilers, so skip through the ones you haven’t watched or planned to watch unless you want to get spoiled. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Anyways, let’s get to it!
1 – NOTTING HILL
“Don’t forget: I’m also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her.” A breathtaking Julia Roberts stands before a dashing Hugh Grant, begging him to love her back. As he seems lost at her words and her face on the verge of tears, so are we across the screen. His rejection after her love profession really did hurt. If he didn’t go after later in the movie to rectify his stupid mistake, it would have been a devastating film indeed. As such, he did go after her, and happily ever after is achieved. Additionally, this heartbreaking and beloved line is born. Plus, who says a girl can’t be the one to confess to a boy? It’s the 21st century; change it up!
2 – PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
“You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.” This proclamation of love, accompanied by a downpour of rain and anxiety, really cemented the moment when every romance movie enthusiast folded into the arms of Mr. Darcy. He is the poster boy for many fictional and historical romance characters from that moment on. Considering the amount of hate and love between the characters at the beginning, the proclamation of love really does take the cake. It relieves all tension and makes us wish for love. Certainly one of the most romantic lines we’ll never forget.
3 – A WALK TO REMEMBER
“Our love is like the wind. I can’t see it, but I can feel it.” Now if we could have an alternate reality where both Landon and Jamie end up happily married forever, that would be great. However, we probably won’t get this beautiful line that means so much more because of her passing. She basically taught him how to love, and then she was gone. But that doesn’t mean the love she has disappears. This movie is a reminder that love perseveres even when we’re gone. We don’t need a physical reminder. Love exists as it is.
4 – THE NOTEBOOK
“So it’s not gonna be easy. It’s going to be really hard; we’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that because I want you. I want all of you, forever, every day. You and me… every day.” Okay, this may be more than a line, but it would be a crime not to include this whole profession of love from Noah to Allie. It’s more than a profession of love. It’s a commitment and a reassurance that he decides to give her. Plus, there’s something romantic about long love professions where you are caught in the heat of passion. This short speech from Noah is one of the most romantic lines we’ll never forget. I could still recall the scene like it was yesterday, as the two argue with ferocity in the rain.
5 – LOVE ROSIE
“Because I’ve realized that no matter where you are or what you’re doing, or who you’re with, I will always honestly, truly, completely love you.” This one is for all those couples who started as friends or best friends. Love Rosie was a rollercoaster ride, with everyone screaming for them to ‘Get together, already!’ on the other side of the screen. It does get endlessly frustrating knowing two people are meant to be together but aren’t. This line in the movie truly showcases that no matter how far you stray from each other, love will find a way if you’re meant to be. You’ll find your way back to each other, even if time passes and circumstances change.
6 – BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
“I wish I knew how to quit you.” Released in a period of time where being gay was a controversial thing, this line in Brokeback Mountain was heart-shattering. Knowing that the two could not be together yet could not quit loving each other is equally devastating and romantic. It is truly one of the few romantic lines we’ll never forget. Rooting for the two Cowboys just to run away together and leave everything behind, only to be disappointed and brokenhearted in the end as they are forced to choose ‘normalcy.’ Brokeback Mountain speaks a lot about those who are closeted and silenced due to their community and the society around them.
7 – BIG FISH
“They say when you meet the love of your life, time stops, and that’s true.” If you’ve ever been in love or experienced love, you would know how it feels to be in a moment where you are so in love with the person in front of you that time seems to stop. This is precisely what this line references and what makes it so memorable. Big Fish is far from your typical romcom, especially with its fantasy themes and interesting storytelling. Even without this memorable line, the movie should be a must-watch for enthusiasts everywhere, simply for its cinematography and beautiful characters.
8 – CALL ME BY YOUR NAME
“Call me by your name, and I’ll call you by mine.” There’s definitely something messed up about Hollywood and making gay love stories end in tragedy or heartbreak, but it did result in one of the most romantic lines we’ll never forget. “Call me by your name, and I’ll call you by mine” holds a soulmate tie interpretation deeply rooted in Greek mythology. You can learn more about that here from this beautiful review of the movie. Call Me By Your Name is a beautiful movie overall that explores young love and sexuality with a sort of freedom and aesthetic approach to it. It makes you want to run away to the Italian countryside with a lover. Somehow eloping doesn’t seem so bad with rose-tinted glasses on.
9 – THE PHOTOGRAPH
“But I need you. And I don’t care where you live. I just want to be close to you as much as possible. I don’t want to be practical. I want to figure it out. And I don’t want so much time to pass that we can’t come back. And I don’t want…” Here’s something I’m sure we all have wished someone would say to us at some point in our lives. That they would just want to be near us and figure things out rather than lose us. Everyone longs to have someone admit they would do everything to be with them. The delivery of this heartfelt confession is as memorable as it gets. The Photograph is a somewhat underrated romantic movie that most people have probably not heard of, but it is worth the watch. The film follows a reporter (Lakeith Stanfield) and the daughter of a famous photographer (Issa Rae) as they get closer and fall in love.
10 – SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
“It was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together… and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home, only to no home I’d ever known. I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car, and I knew. It was like… magic.” Are you having a sleepless night? Well, you might as well watch a movie instead (or rewatch) with Sleepless in Seattle. Either you’ll fall asleep with a smile or tears down your cheeks as a young Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan deliver some heartfelt lines and fall in love on screen. This love confession and realization is just a heartfelt insight into realizing that you are in love. Many people don’t believe in love at first sight, but they might accept love at first touch. There is more to it than that, of course. Love is a culmination of many things at once that make it whole. This profession showcases just that.
