I’m always an advocate for a tropical vacation for any special occasion, ranging from anniversaries to birthdays to a Tuesday afternoon in March. For those seeking a romantic retreat, there are some beautiful islands out there to explore.

If you’re looking for ideas on where to head for a relaxing time for loungers, thrills for adventure seekers, and everything in between, we’ve got you covered.

Beautiful sunsets, turquoise waters, soft white sand, and lovely weather? Yes, please! If a guy wants to know the quickest way to a girl’s heart, it’s a surprise trip to Bora Bora for a special occasion! You and your partner can try water sports like jet skiing, paddleboarding, and traditional Polynesian outrigger canoeing. This tropical paradise boasts stunning overwater bungalows, vibrant coral reefs, and a secluded atmosphere perfect for romantic getaways.

2. Maldives

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Maldives in recent years. It’s a picture-perfect destination with world-class diving spots and unparalleled natural beauty. Couples can engage in traditional festivities such as bodu beru drumming performances, local island festivals, and gathering for traditional Maldivian cuisine feasts called “Hedhikaa.” There are plenty of unique activities that visitors might not encounter through typical tourist experiences.

3. Seychelles

What says “I want nothing more than to be with you” than impeccable secluded beaches? Make your partner’s day when you whisk them away to Seychelles. The granite rock formations and lush jungles are stunning, and they’re a lovely background for Insta-worthy pictures and cherished memories. Locals often enjoy the “moutya” dance performances and delectable Creole cuisine like “ladob” which is a dessert made with fruits and coconut milk.

4. Santorini, Greece

In Santorini, plan a date night to go out and mingle with the communities for an authentic Greek experience. There’s nothing like dancing under the stars and participating in grape harvest festivals showcasing the island’s renowned wines. I’m going to add this to my personal bucket list, as I’ve always wanted to visit Santorini since watching The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It looks dreamy!

5. Fiji

Taking a trip to Fiji is a wonderful honeymoon idea. Couples can go on a romantic sunset cruise, sailing while sipping tropical cocktails and being in awe of the breathtaking scenery. Fiji also has a warm and welcoming culture, and couples will have a blast partaking in the rich traditions of song, dance, and storytelling. Try out a luxurious resort, go on eco-adventures, or steal away to the secluded islands for some alone time.

6. Barbados

Home to Rihanna, Barbados is a Caribbean gem with palm-tree-lined beaches, vibrant waters, and an intriguing culture that sets the stage for unforgettable experiences with your loved one. Barbados offers couples the perfect blend of relaxation and excitement. A few friends I know who traveled there for spring break mentioned how much fun it was to explore the historic capital of Bridgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond that, sampling delicious Bajan cuisine at lively rum shacks and street food markets with delicious seafood sounds amazing.

7. Mauritius

Mauritius is a tropical paradise. The island nation of East Africa is seriously slept on! It entices couples with its multicultural charm, impeccable beaches, and the mountainous Black River Gorges National Park. The waterfalls there are incredible, and the main island itself, where most of the population is concentrated, is amongst the most beautiful I’ve ever seen (from the pictures). Foodie couples get to indulge in gourmet dining experiences featuring exquisite Mauritian cuisine infused with Creole, Indian, Chinese, and French influences.

8. Palawan, Philippines

Palawan is definitely a couple’s dream destination. Venturing through the hidden lagoons together and going on snorkeling adventures is the perfect vacation. The island has luxurious resort options in the middle of tropical forests, which is quite a sight to wake up to each day. Start the day with a hike and sharing a romantic dinner by the beach, watching the sunset over the horizon to end the night. Don’t forget to check out iconic sites like the Underground River while you’re there.

9. St. Lucia

If there was a place where you could have a chance to create a romance that gives The Notebook a run for its money, St. Lucia would be the place to do it. We’re talking pristine beaches, bright pink and purple skies as evening sets, Piton mountains—the works! Two of the most unique activities include zip-lining through the rainforest canopy and going on a chocolate-making tour where you two can learn about the island’s cocoa heritage while creating delicious treats to enjoy.

10. The Cook Islands

The Cook Islands have been referred to as “the best-kept secret in the Pacific Ocean.” There’s a ton to do, from sampling the local cuisine to going diving, waterskiing, and snorkeling to check out the coral reefs and more. The scenery is so beautiful; why not get a couple’s massage on the beach while staring out into the blue horizon? This hidden paradise has double kayaks to rent, bike tours, or just powdery sand to sink your toes into while gazing into one another’s eyes. The experience is everything!

11. Turks and Caicos Islands

If you’re thinking of Turks and Caicos Islands for a romantic getaway, you’re in for a treat. The beaches themselves are an obvious activity, but there’s more to do than just beach bumming. You two can go snorkeling, reserve a room in a secluded villa, or book more unique experiences like participating in guided glow worm tours, where visitors can observe the captivating bioluminescent display in the nighttime waters. Additionally, travelers can explore the world’s only conch farm through informative tours, gaining insights into conch farming and its ecological significance.

12. Majorca

Majorca is an ideal destination for couples who want to check out beautiful Mediterranean landscapes. Some popular outings include picnics in intimate coves, venturing through the Drach Caves together, or indulging in a wine-tasting tour through the island’s vineyards. According to TripAdvisor, many couples recommend taking a sunset cruise on a luxury yacht while gazing out at the Balearic Sea.

13. Antigua

Antigua is on my anniversary bucket list for sure! The island is known for its beautiful beaches and historic sites, making it a great spot for couples to visit if you want a more cultured vacation. Wake up to breathtaking views of crystal clear waters, go sunbathing on the white and pink sand beaches, or go horseback riding along the shore while holding hands. Don’t miss taking a tour of places like Fort James or Devil’s Bridge National Park for its unique natural rock arch. And if you’re up for a road trip, Fig Tree Drive offers a scenic route through the island’s rainforests and farmland.

14. Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman welcomes couples with a delightful blend of tropical beauty and luxury. If you and your significant other are adventurous, consider going on a snorkeling excursion to Stingray City, where you can swim alongside stingrays in their natural habitat. There are so many excellent reviews about the cuisine alone that foodies may want to center their trip around delicious Caribbean fare, starting with a private beachfront dinner under the stars.

15. Santa Catalina Island

Santa Catalina Island offers a variety of activities for couples to enjoy together. There are island adventure tours with hiking, snorkeling, and kayaking, as well as romantic dining experiences at fine restaurants or picnics on the many beaches; there’s something for every couple’s taste. Other date ideas include a walk through the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden or a glass bottom boat tour to see the underwater world without getting wet.
