America is the third most populated country in the world, but how does each state within the Union break down?

Some regions attract more people than others, thanks to weather, cost of living, and economic opportunities. Let’s take a look at the top 15 most populated states in the U.S.

1. California

While California is the most populous state, its growth has decreased slightly in recent years. Still, people are drawn to the glamor and wonder of a place where dreams can come true.

2. Texas

They say everything is bigger in Texas. It’s a running theme in the Lone Star State, and it doesn’t disappoint. The state has more than 29.5 million residents and steady population growth. Thankfully, there’s a lot of space to go around.

3. Florida

Florida ranks third in population, due to cities like Miami, Orlando, and Jacksonville that attract younger people. Let’s not forget the elderly population loves Florida as well. The weather is good for their joints, and there’s no lack of senior citizen communities to choose from.

As Frank Sinatra sang, “I want to be a part of it, New York, New York!” Hundreds of thousands flock to The Empire State to follow their passion and live the American Dream.

5. Pennsylvania

Keeping within the nearby Tri-State Area of the Northeast, Pennsylvania boasts almost 13 million people. Most residents live in Philadelphia and surrounding areas, which have recorded a steady increase in population over the last 10 years.

6. Illinois

There’s a lot to Illinois besides Chicago, although much of the state’s population resides in or near the Windy City. For generations, people have migrated to this Midwestern state, once called the Inland Empire State.

7. Ohio

Following closely behind its Midwestern neighbor of Illinois, Ohio ranks seventh on the list of most populated states. Surprised? Considering the affordable housing market and general cost of living, more folks are finding their way to the Buckeye State.

8. Georgia

Georgia has seen a significant increase in growth in the last decade — nearly 14%. Thanks to a growing film and television industry, more artists and performers are building the entertainment industry in and around Atlanta.

9. North Carolina

North Carolina has continued to see an uptick in population in the last year. People enjoy the beautiful coasts, history, and cultural significance, not to mention career opportunities for younger generations.

10. Michigan

The automotive industry has more ties to Michigan than any other state. Over the last century, manufacturing drew people to the area, and generations continue to remain close to their roots with a steady increase in population since 2010.

11. New Jersey

Many people may think of New Jersey as New York’s younger sibling, but it can stand its ground, with nearly 10 million residents. The average median wage is in the top percentile of the national average. That’s a good incentive for newcomers to find a place in The Garden State.

12. Virginia

A steady trickle of people moving to Virginia has increased its population to almost 9 million. Not only is Virginia rich with history, but there’s a balance of urban cities and country living that provides a variety of life.

13. Washington

The Pacific Northwest is a playground for outdoor lovers who want mountains and the ocean nearby. Washington ranks 13th on our list and continues to see an increase in population in recent years.

14. Arizona

The Southwest is another growing region. Arizona’s good economy, warm weather, and reasonable cost of living keep pulling people away from more expensive states like California.

15. Tennessee

Tennessee rounds out the list. This gem of a state sits between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Mississippi River. It has just over 7 million residents. With more than a 1% increase in just the last year, more folks are finding a home in The Volunteer State.
