The 13 Voices We’d Love to Narrate Our Lives

Some voices are so soothing and intoxicating that we’d listen to them read the phone book.

Some actors could make these obsolete things, such as the Yellow Pages or a Sears Catalog, sound as beautiful as angels singing.

Or maybe perhaps we’d want them to narrate our lives. Personally, I’m going to go with the latter.

1. Benedict Cumberbatch

There’s a reason why Peter Jackson chose Benedict Cumberbatch to be the voice of Smaug, the dragon in The Hobbit films. He can do things that seem otherworldly with his voice. His incredible talent also comes in the form of the various accents he uses in films.

Not often can a performer enthrall viewers with both a British and American accent like Cumberbatch.

2. Ian McKellen

When Peter Jackson cast Ian McKellen as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings films, we saw something besides an incredible performance. He shot to the top of many people’s lists of favorite voices. Full of age, wisdom, and character, his accent and speech pattern exude such richness.

Many could listen to him recite Tolkien or Shakespeare, tell a funny story, read off a shopping list, and be equally enchanted.

3. Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston could make anything sound gorgeous and intoxicating with a voice as smooth as silk. The most mundane things, such as a recipe or the weather forecast, could give us goosebumps. Make it something more interesting, such as romantic poetry, and many would completely melt.

He’s utilized his voice in this way, narrating eight books and lending his voice to an ASMR calming app.

4. Jeremy Irons

One word to describe Jeremy Iron’s voice would be commanding. But many find it fascinating how his voice can elicit a sardonic, bellowing timbre while remaining soothing. No one could have voiced Scar the way Irons did.

Unsurprisingly, he narrates several projects, giving audiences delightful shivers down their spines.

5. Jack Davenport

If I could choose anyone to narrate my life story, it would be Jack Davenport. His voice has depth and range, deep, profound tones, and a more playful higher register. Suppose someone closes their eyes on their next viewing of Pirates of the Caribbean and listens to Davenport’s voice.

In that case, they’ll surely be transported to someplace divine. Davenport lends his voice and narrates several shorts, films, and audiobooks with his bewitching voice.

6. Cate Blanchett

The brilliance and appeal of Cate Blanchett’s voice lie within her mastery of several accents and dialects.

Each registers differently, with the same beauty, softness, and allure. From her natural Australian accent to Galadriel in Lord of the Rings, Blanchett could charm the birds from the trees.

7. Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth commands the screen with his stature but also with his deep, powerful, smooth, and rich-as-honey voice. Filmmakers could see and hear his gravitas when casting Thor, making him the perfect choice.

But as charismatic and physically attractive audiences find Hemsworth, he could make a living and mesmerize droves with his voice alone. He would never have to show his face again.

8. Peter Coyote

Many people would choose Peter Coyote for the unique texture and personality of his voice. And they would not be alone. The acclaimed actor has lent his vocal talents to multiple projects of rich significance and pathos, such as documentaries about American landscapes, wartime, nature, and notable individuals in history.

He’s the “go-to” for a Ken Burns film, and for good reason.

9. Sam Elliott

If someone wanted a narrator for a Western film or documentary about the Old West, look no further than Sam Elliott.

Of course, his deep, grizzled voice exudes confidence, warmth, and knowledge; he could recite a catalog and captivate listeners.

10. Morgan Freeman

Most people would agree that Morgan Freeman reigns supreme as the Voice King. Deep and smooth, you can hear the wisdom coming through with each syllable. And he’s not without charm that he can convey as much as poignancy.

Filmmakers agree as Freeman lends his voice to multiple films and documentaries, including March of the PenguinsWar of the WorldsLife of Our Planet, and 100 Years of Warner Brothers.

11. Mandy Moore

Mandy Moore often comes to mind when fans think of performers with sweet, lilting, comforting voices. One person points out, “Her voice acting was so expressive in Tangled.” Voicing a Disney Princess garners much attention, but Moore gave her all and won many hearts with her lovely speaking and angelic singing.

A Walk to Remember director Adam Shankman even cast Moore after hearing her song “I Wanna Be With You.”

12. Julie Andrews

The epitome of beauty and grace, Julie Andrews exudes these qualities in her demeanor and soothing and melodic vocals. She represents the voice of many individual’s childhoods with her roles in The Sound of MusicMary Poppins, and The Princess Diaries.

But it was a stroke of genius to cast her as the narrator for the series Bridgerton, as she emotes elegance with a hint of sauciness.

13. Scarlett Johansson

Unsurprisingly, many people could listen to Scarlett Johansson’s sultry, silky voice for hours upon end. She voices an AI device in Her, and she literally bewitches Joaquin Phoenix’s character so profoundly he falls in love.

She could beautifully narrate a romance novel, biography, or historical documentary with her rich and honey-silk vocals.
