Philippe Starck’s Latest Fossil Watches

by Paul Strauss

I’m always struck by the graceful simplicity of Phillipe Starck’s watch designs. His latest creations are as dramatic as anything else I’ve seen in his past collections. The highlight of these as-yet-unnamed watches is their unique see-through case design.

Philipe Starck See Through WatchPhillipe Starck See Through Watch

From what I’ve heard, the metal of the inner part of the display has been cantilevered out into a clear section of the metal case to produce a dramatic face that you can see right through. A textured leather band provides a nice contrast to the ultra-modern watch face.

Pricing hasn’t yet been revealed for these latest Starck watches, but I’ve been told to look for them on the Fossil website this Fall.

[UPDATE 8/28: These watches are now available here. The square version is called the Starckore and the round version is called the Satelitum, and they range in price from $150 to $160.]

  2. Cantilevered Starck Watches…

Technabob pointed to Phillipe Starck’s latest, cantilevered watch design the other day. As usual, the design is brilliantly minimal while still innovative. Gizmodo picked up the news/photo and then added, “their innards are cheap as a dime …

  8. Steven Nielsen says:

Thanks, I too have been looking everywhere for the Starck crystal clear series Fossil. Good to know it’s on the way.

  9. Xelas says:

I also called fossil about the crystal clear series.
They told me june 16th. The rep also hinted if it even comes out then. He said not to preorder because most likely it will not even come close to meeting the release date.
It is now july 19th and still no crystal clear series. Seems the rep was right

  10. Xelas says:

Called Fossil again. This time they said Sep. 20th

BTW this watch is Model PH1100 Philippe Starck Crystal Clear Sieries

If you Google the Fossil PH1100 it will direct you to the secondary info page after you have click on a watch off of the main display page from fossil that is set up and ready to go.
However this page cannot be accessed from thier main website because it is not a listed product. It is just dormant in waiting for stock.

  11. Steven Nielsen says:

the actual model in the Maxim issue is PH1098….FYI

  12. Xelas says:

I like the clear one better than the red one. was hoping for a neon green one with a black PU strap. However I will be bying the clear.

  13. Steven Nielsen says:

Fossil Webguy says 8/28 is the estimated ship date

  14. Chris says:

This is great news. I e-mailed Maxim and also Fossil when I first saw this in the May issue of Maxim and didn’t get a response. Looks like my wait will soon be over

  15. Steven Nielsen says:

Fossil webguy now says 10/25 release date for the Crystal Clear series. FYI

  16. technabob says:

Thanks for the tip on the release date. I’ve just put up a post about the Crystal Clear (with photos):

  17. Steven Nielsen says:

nice post….there are 4 models I found…I think you can google them and go to the items on Fossils website. PH1097, PH1098, PH1100 and PH1101. FYI

  18. EROD says:

Looking for a PH2002 model. It’s a discontinued model but someone, somewhere must have one I suppose.

  19. Steven Nielsen says:

    PH1097 and PH1098 are available…finally!!!!

  20. Steven Nielsen says:

Well I spoke to soon. I was on the Fossil site last night and the watches could be added to my shopping bag, now it says item out of stock again. They either made an error or the stock they had on hand sold out right away. Interesting indeed.

  21. b says:

The Fossil store in Downtown Disney Anaheim has the Ph1098 model in stock– I bought one this morning. They also have the model that has a white band and clear face– I think it is the Ph 1099. Hope this helps.

  22. Steven Nielsen says:

I’m glad to hear they are available somewhere. Can you tell me about the size of the watch? I like the look but I like big watches. Thanks.

  23. b says:

    Steven– regarding the Ph1098 model:
The red face of the watch is about 1 3/16 inches across and 1 inch vertically. There are is a metal strip above the red face and one below it– from strip to strip it is 1 3/8 inches. The band at its widest points (the ends nearest the face) are also about 1 3/16 inches across and it narrows down to an inch closer to the clasp/buckle. It is a nice size, but it is not as big or bulky as some of the watches on the market right now. Also, it is super lightweight. One unfortunate thing about this watch is that the face is plastic and will inevitably get scratched, as most watch faces have a tendency to do, but I think this particular watch will be especially prone to scratches. Please let me know if you need any clarification on anything from the above description.
I’m sure other Fossil locations have it in stock. If you call the downtown disney location, they may be able to tell you which stores have it in your area. I’m just glad that someone finally has it– I’ve been searching for one for my boyfriend since May.

  24. Xelas says:

Ordered the Crystal Clear Sieries PH1101
As the above poster said It is small, and will get scratched easily. You can see the scuff marks when you tilt it to the light new right out of the box. However the thing that bothers me the most is, while wearing this watch it is extremely hard to read the display even in direct sunlight. It is not an atractive watch. It is definatly different in person than seen in the photos. It just looks cheap. I am sending mine back for refund.
Its too bad because I was really looking forward to this watch.

  25. technabob says:

That’s too bad. The photos do make it look nicer than that.

  26. Xelas says:

Yea the photos make it look sweet.
I also have the O-Ring Digi watch. It too is hard to read in low light, but the clear series is hard to read in both low, and direct light. Im much more happy with the O-Ring watch. It has a much larger face, and is heavier. Much nicer looking.
I strongly belive thta purchacers of the clear sieries will be disapointed.

  27. Steven Nielsen says:

What a disappointment. Too bad because I also was waiting for this to come out. Sounds like a poor design overall and a real stinker of a product. Not typical of Fossil at all. I would not have expected that.

  28. yammy says:

i love the watch. its been really great so far. this is my second one and i must say they just get better. i love the fact that the crown is located on the inside of the timepiece for time adjustments, and its super comfortable on my wrist. his clasps are always easy to use too. it does get alot of attention as well..since i put it on, i got comments..you just have to remember to treat it like a fine timepiece because the daily abuse can really devalue the overall finish.

  29. DD says:

I finally got one too and it is a letdown. The orange in the photos is not what you get and the time cannot be read when the watch is on your hand. Fossil said that how these negative display watches are, all dim. they said the pictures were altered to show better online. Well that’s great, but I bought the watch because of the picture, and I have to pay to send it back even though they admitted the pictures have been altered to contrast the time.
