12 Movies Featuring Protagonists That Are Awful People

You’re supposed to root for a movie’s protagonist. They’re one of the main characters and are generally written as likable. Sometimes, however, that’s hard to do. We’re not talking about when the film is about watching someone self-destruct, either. For whatever reason, these movie main characters find a way to become not just unlikable but, in some cases, truly horrible people.

Rose Dawson – Titanic

I get that Rose’s fiance isn’t the best person in the world, but she ditches her entire family for some guy she just met.

Then she drops the Heart of the Ocean off the boat at the end despite its large reward.

Oh, and we can’t forget that after Jack asked her to let go, she let go. There was plenty of room on that door, Rose!

Scott Pilgrim – Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

To be fair, this is the entire point of the movie: Scott Pilgrim isn’t a good dude, and he has to come to terms with that.

Maverick – Top Gun

Despite thinking he’s the greatest pilot in the world, Maverick is indeed cashing checks his body can’t cash. Tom Cruise’s iconic character needs to learn to keep his ego in check.

RIP, Goose.

Claire Dearing – Jurassic World

After a history of disaster surrounding the park dinosaurs, Claire would know better than to let them get out and endanger everyone.

Well, you thought wrong.

Bill – Twister

What kind of guy brings his fiance to the middle of nowhere and spends the entire time flirting with his ex-wife? This guy, that’s who.

And he even ends up leaving his fiance for his ex-wife!

Diana Prince / Wonder Woman – Wonder Woman 1984

After a successful debut feature film, many moviegoers were disappointed with how Diana is portrayed inĀ Wonder Woman 1984. The idea of wishing Steve back into existence by taking over a random person’s body doesn’t sit well with fans.

Peter Venkman – Ghostbusters

Venrkman hits on his students, abuses his power, and falsifies his research.

Walter Peck made a very reasonable request, and Venkman acts like he’s the worst person in New York City.

James Bond – The James Bond Franchise

It shouldn’t be surprising that Mr. Bond isn’t the best person, but that’s also part of his job. He’s not supposed to be nice; he’s supposed to get the job done.

Daniel Hillard / Euphegenia Doubtfire – Mrs. Doubtfire

Anytime you purposely attempt to kill someone with an allergy at a restaurant, you should be jailed. Instead, Daniel Hillard can see his kids again.

Dewey Finn – School of Rock

Do you know what’s not cool? Impersonating as your roommate so you can be a substitute teacher for kids attending a prestigious school. Their parents pay an arm and a leg for tuition and have their lives endangered.

Tom Hansen – (500) Days of Summer

Tom Hansen is not a good person. He spends far too long hung up on his ex-girlfriend while living in a delusional fantasy world.

Thankfully, he comes to his senses at the end, but my god, man, talk to a therapist.

Grandpa Joe – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Oh sure, now that your grandson has a Golden Ticket, you can get out of bed.

Grandpa Joe is a bad person and should feel bad.
