3D Visualization Comparing Animal Top Speeds

Created by Youtube channel RED SIDE, this is a 3D visualization comparing the top running speeds of various animals. I learned a lot by watching it, mostly that I wouldn’t want to be chased by a lot of these animals. I don’t care if the video says the top running speed of a human is around 14.9 MPH; mine is probably only a quarter of that.

The first half of the video visualizes the top speed of animals as viewed from the ground beside them, beginning with a 0.03MPH snail and ending with an 80.00MPH cheetah. The second half of the video shows what it would look like to travel at each animal’s top speed while riding atop that animal. I particularly liked this part of the video because I’ve always wanted to know what it would look like riding a lion. It was every bit as exhilarating as I’d imagined.

While humans do appear to have a faster top speed than a fair amount of the animals in the video, the problem is that a lot of animals we aren’t faster than are the ones you would definitely wish you could outrun. I’m not concerned with outrunning a frog or crab; it’s the hippos and rhinos that I’m worried about. Thankfully, there don’t appear to be many in my neighborhood…yet.
