Building A Propeller Driven LEGO Drift Car

With over 17 years of writing experience, Jonathan has had a passion for all things tech-related, ever since watching Inspector Gadget as a child. He's disassembled countless appliances and managed to put a few back together, and one still works. When not writing, he can often be found playing video games or accidentally hurting himself in the garage.

The brainchild of Youtuber Build It With Bricks, this drift car was constructed almost entirely with LEGO and Technic bricks. It uses a rotatable propeller to power its movement and steer. From watching the video, I gather it’s not the easiest vehicle to steer precisely, but it makes up for what it lacks in precision in smooth drifting.

After constructing the fan assembly, numerous tests were performed to maximize power output, including experimenting with different gear ratios and the number of fan blades. Eventually, a two-blade design was chosen, and the rest of the car was built around the fan assembly. The car uses two powerful BuWizz motors and a BuWizz 3.0 Pro battery to power the propeller and one large LEGO Technic Powered UP motor for the steering, operated via radio controller.

Do I want to build a life-size version I can actually sit in and drive? Of course I do, but that doesn’t mean I’ll ever do it. I’ll say it’s because of safety concerns, but not so deep down I know it’s because I have neither the skill nor determination to complete the project. Plus, how could I ever afford that many LEGO bricks?!
