Crafting A 3D Checkerboard Optical Illusion Guitar

With over 17 years of writing experience, Jonathan has had a passion for all things tech-related, ever since watching Inspector Gadget as a child. He's disassembled countless appliances and managed to put a few back together, and one still works. When not writing, he can often be found playing video games or accidentally hurting himself in the garage.

The brainchild of guitarist and luthier Burls Art, this 3D checkerboard optical illusion guitar was crafted by meticulously cutting, organizing, and gluing contrasting trapezoids of maple and walnut together to form the eye-bending pattern. A similar technique is used to make fancy cutting boards. My cutting board? It’s just the kitchen counter.

The pattern isn’t just a top layer, either. The blocks are the full depth of the guitar, so the rear features the same trippy pattern as the front. Could you imagine if some rock star smashed this guitar on stage? They should have their strumming hand tied behind their back so they could never play again.

What a beautiful instrument. It’s mesmerizing, almost TOO mesmerizing, and I worry that if I were playing it, I would get lost in the pattern and lose focus. And my guitar playing is never great anyways, so I really need all the help I can get.
