Sometimes a bad movie is a guilty pleasure or becomes an ironic cult classic. Think of The Room by Tommy Wiseau. It’s one of the worst movies ever made, but has a dedicated audience that finds enjoyment in its awfulness.
The “so bad they’re actually good” films are almost like an art form that moviegoers can’t help but love. Not every bad movie is worth watching, however. Today, we’re going to look at the movies that are so downright awful it takes a strong fortitude to finish them. Here are 15 movies so bad we couldn’t finish them.
You People
While mainly a Netflix release, You People was released in select theaters across the United States.
With an impressive cast, you’d figure You People could do well to entertain and succeed. Yet a chief criticism of the film is how it feels like Hollywood refuses to live outside its bubble. The movie is also accused of being severely anti-Semitic.
Cats
The beloved musical had a lot of hype leading into its theatrical release.
While the costumes are enjoyable, the rest of the film is like a car crash you can’t look away from. It’s just so, so bad and makes people wonder what the filmmakers were thinking when adapting the beloved musical.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
The second entry in the Jurassic World trilogy brought back Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcom. For one scene. At the end of the movie. This means you had to sit through two hours of what attempts to resemble a functional plot.
All of the Jurassic World movies have cool ideas but terrible execution. Still, it’s at least better than…
Jurassic World: Dominion
Where do we even begin here?
Despite bringing back the original Jurassic Park cast, nothing could save this movie. Many fans of the series expressed having tears in their eyes, but not tears of joy. They had seen a beloved movie franchise be butchered in front of them. Their time would have been better spent walking out.
Suicide Squad
We’re talking about the 2016 Suicide Squad, not the James Gunn Suicide Squad.
Everyone knows the often-mocked line from Will Smith: “So that’s it? What? We some kinda…Suicide Squad?” Smart moviegoers walked out of the theater right then and there.
Wonder Woman 1984
For Pedro Pascal, life is good, but it can be better. He moved on from an incredibly disappointing Wonder Woman sequel to new heights with 2023’s The Last of Us on HBO.
Unfortunately, Wonder Woman 1984 cannot meet the expectations of the original Wonder Woman movie. Instead, the sequel falls victim to tropes and traits of sequels: trying to do too much. Plus, the plot point of Steve Trevor taking over someone else’s body, especially in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, is still under fire today.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
It turns out that when you entirely undo any of the consequences from the first movie and fill a sequel with awful writing, you’re just asking moviegoers to walk out of the theater.
Not only is Crimes of Grindelwald a disappointing movie, but it also retcons the original release with nothing more than a hand wave.
Black Adam
Dwayne Johnson’s first superhero movie isn’t the best film in the world.
Black Adam is a generic, run-of-the-mill superhero movie that fails to impress even as a popcorn flick. In our review, we said the film was cliched and bland. Unfortunately, other superhero movies tell the same message. Heck, most superhero movies do a better job.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Somehow, Palpatine returned. That line likely caused even the most die-hard Star Wars fans to walk out of theaters.
Some commenters stated that they’d rather see Cats than Rise of Skywalker. That’s saying something. It was clear from the beginning that the Star Wars sequel trilogy had no plan, and each movie featured the writers and directors just winging it.
The Mummy
The Tom Cruise Mummy, not the Brendan Frasier Mummy. The latter is an absolute classic. The former is a movie studio’s poor attempt to make a franchise out of nothing. Since, you know, that’s what studios do nowadays: extended universes.
The film was so disappointing that Universal’s plans for an extended monster universe were soon scrapped.
Blonde
Despite the pre-release buzz for the Marilyn Monroe movie, Blonde is described as more boring than watching paint dry.
Moviegoers even mistook the movie’s name for “Marilyn,” not “Blonde.” They described the movie as so lackluster they couldn’t even remember its name.
The Eternals
After the success of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had some stumbling blocks. The first of which is The Eternals.
The movie is admittedly a big gamble for Marvel, but in the eyes of many, it’s not one that paid off. Considering people walking out of this film and not, say, Thor: The Dark World, that’s honestly saying something.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Speaking of Thor and Marvel movies, Love and Thunder is one of the most disappointing films in recent memory. Despite the success of Thor: Ragnarok and the performance by Christian Bale, Love and Thunder couldn’t meet the hype.
Death on the Nile
Some Hollywood remakes are successful. But, unfortunately, Death on the Nile is not one of them.
Despite its strong source material, the remake is pretentious and filled with CGI. If you want to watch an adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel, stick with the 1978 original.
The Matrix Resurrections
The trailers for the surprise fourth entry in the Matrix movie seemed promising.
Keanu Reeves has established himself as a premiere action star thanks to his work in the John Wick franchise. But, sadly, that magic couldn’t translate to the newest Matrix movie. Whether watching it in theaters or at home on HBO, many fans couldn’t bear to watch it.
Bonus: Morbius
On the one hand, the disaster that is Morbius is well-known across the entire galaxy. Yet everyone is afraid to admit that this is the greatest movie of all time.
Jared Leto’s ability to deliver a compelling and tragic story helps elevate this comic book movie to cinematic art. Unfortunately, its snubs from fans, critics, and the Academy are one of the greatest tragedies of our time.
Morbius transcends bad movies. It’s so awful that you should walk out on it, but you can’t look away. Before you know it, you’ve spent the past ten hours watching it on Twitch and wondering what you’ve done with your life.
