Humanoid Robot Upgraded With OpenAI, Can Now Have Real-Time Conversations

With over 17 years of writing experience, Jonathan has had a passion for all things tech-related, ever since watching Inspector Gadget as a child. He's disassembled countless appliances and managed to put a few back together, and one still works. When not writing, he can often be found playing video games or accidentally hurting himself in the garage.

Figure 01 is an AI-powered humanoid robot built by technology firm Figure with the intention of “producing an abundance of affordable, more widely available goods and services to a degree which humanity has never seen.” Now, it’s been upgraded with ChatGPT capabilities from OpenAI to converse with humans in real time. Finally, a robot with some answers!

With the added OpenAI capabilities, Figure 01 can be asked about its environment and respond after taking actively gathered data into consideration. In the video, the robot can describe what it sees around itself in a voice that sounds eerily like Rob Lowe. Did it steal his voice? Maybe!

“We’ve always planned to come back to robotics and we see a path with Figure to explore what humanoid robots can achieve when powered by highly capable multimodal models. We’re blown away by Figure’s progress to date and we look forward to working together to open up new possibilities for how robots can help in everyday life,” said Peter Welinder, VP of Product and Partnerships at OpenAI.

How could robots help in my everyday life? Simple: They could do all my work for me, but I would still get paid for the work. That’s all I need. I just want to sit on a beach somewhere while my humanoids rake in the dollars. I don’t even mind if the work is hard — I’m sure they can handle it.
