I was checking out the bargain basement tech over on DealExtreme this morning, and came across this oddity. According to the manufacturer, what we’ve got here is an MP5, yes M-P-FIVE player.

As far as I know, there is no official MP5 file format. As best I can tell is that this is just some sort of marketing hooey, designed to deceive the public into thinking they’re getting their hands on something new and exciting. The $60 player looks like any other cheap MP4/MP3 media player, complete with a 2.5-inch color screen, an FM tuner and 1GB of flash memory.
If you’re willing to take a gamble on one of these players, you can pick one up here. As is always the case with this kind of stuff, Caveat Emptor.

My daughter bought one at a tech fair called commart in Pattaya recently. It will only play AVI files, but in general works very well.

I have a similar player with Mp4 on it. Its just a marketing ploy, they don’t play mp4 files. Its a nice little player though. It comes with software to convert your mp4, divx or whatever to the proprietary format that the player uses.

Well, it’s still not an actual file format. There are just a bunch of companies using the “MP5″ name.

MP5 is just a term used in China as an upgrade from MP4 players. So far, there isn’t any MP5 formats. They are basically video/audio players that has a touch screen.
And even if it’s an MP4 player, doesn’t mean it can play MP4 (MPEG4) video files. MP4 is just a term for an Audio player that has Video (whatever format) playing capabilities.
