kern: the game for typography nerds

If you prefer to call capital letters “majuscules,” you probably aren’t the type to shy away from words like kerning and ligature, either. And that’s okay, because there are games that cater even to you typography nerds, or at least game, singular: KERN, available now from the Apple AppStore.

KERN is a little like Tetris, except it’s all about placing letters in their proper places. You can move the letter back and forth on the screen while the rest of the word advances downward, and when you think you’ve got it, rush the rest of the letters down. You’re then given a score. Pretty simple, pretty nifty, and very, very geeky–which might make it a perfect iPhone game.

You can even check out a video of KERN in action:

  1. That is a cool game, actually.

  2. Rae says:

The thing that amuses me about this is, if these pictures are actually directly from the game, that for such an “intelligent” and vocabulary-based diversion, they still didn’t manage to use a possessive “its” properly.

Perhaps the designers should spend less time with a thesaurus and a little more time with a copy editor.
