LEGO Releases Official LOTR Minifig Images, LEGO Gollum is Precious

by

We told you the other day about some upcoming LEGO Lord of the Rings minifigs and playsets on the way, and now we have some official images of the complete minifig collection, courtesy of the fine folks at LEGO (after a bit of Photoshop slicing-and-dicing to fit them all here.)

We already got to see some close up pics last time of Frodo, Legolas and Aragorn, but everyone else was pretty hard to make out. Now we get to see the entire collection, and they look pretty awesome. I especially love the Ringwraith – just give him a lightsaber and a face, and he’s Darth Vader. Those orcs are pretty cool too.

After seeing the Ultimate Factories special on how complicated and costly it is to make completely new LEGO molds, I really have a new appreciation for the pièce de résistance – Gollum. Here he is in all his glory. No CGI, No Andy Serkis. Just 100% LEGO:

He does look a little more devious in the large poster than in the minifig version shown above, though. I’m kind of hoping the final figure looks more like the big image. There’s still no word on an official release date or the specific sets or prices, but I’ll be sure to let you know when we know more about these great new LOTR LEGO sets coming out sometime this Summer.

Apparently LEGOlas, Pippin and Merry aren’t trademarked.
I really want all of these, but the lack of Bilbo so close to the release of The Hobbit is almost shameful. A few other key-characters are missing aswell, Arwen and Count Dooku spring to mind, but perhaps they are saved for a possible extention to the collection. And may I say, that is one massive ring!

    • Technabob says:

I assume you meant Saruman, not Count Dooku – unless we’re talking LEGO Star Wars. Same actor, though. :)

      • Rustin Haase says:

We really do need Soruman, maybe we still will see him in another set. I can sympathize with Kenny saying Count Dooku rather than Saruman. This Christmas break my family and I watched all 6 Star Wars movies and the 3 Lord of the rings right after each other. After a while it all becomes a blur. :-)

I would say that the Soruman/Saruman Actor has been effectively Typcast just like the Gandolf/Dumbledorf Actor. :-) They probably would rather have more variety in work but its a good niche. Other beloved actors like Leanard Nemoy & Jim Nabors had lot so other talents but their Spock/Gomer Pyle characters were so distinctive, they could never break out. Still, they didn’t starve to death. :-)

Ummm, Ian McKellan would have been a great choice for Dumbledore, but that was not him! Dumbledore was played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. I’ve only seen Richard Harris as D, and all I can say is, I knew Gandalf, and he’s no Gandalf!

That’s a nice one to have..You know recently lego minifigures series has come up with a Special Olympic collection. I just got it. Its amazing!
