Display-makers Sony Corporation and Samsung Electronics announced today that they have signed a deal to build a massive new LCD production facility capable of manufacturing 46 and 50 inch LCD displays. The new facility can crank out up to six 50″ or eight 46″ LCD panels from a single glass sheet. Their prior facility maxed out at 46″. The facility is slated to open in fall 2007 with a production target of 50,000 panels per month.
The companies plan to invest over $1.9 billion in the facility, with each company putting up half of the cost. This is just another step in the right direction for lower prices large LCDs.
The “eight-generation” LCD production line will be located alongside their other facilities in Tangjeong, ChungCheongNam-Do, Korea.
