We continue to get cool new toys to celebrate Star Trek’s 50th birthday. This Star Trek TNG ComBadge is what we have needed for years so we can communicate with our shipmates. It has a built-in microphone for hands-free calling.

Star Trek fans who prefer the original series to its other incarnations, prepare to have a nerdgasm. You can soon get your hands on an original series Bluetooth communicator. Inside the gadget is Bluetooth hardware and a rechargeable battery that allows you to pair it with your smartphone and actually receive calls and talk via the communicator.

As a geek I have always wanted my own communicator badges like the ones worn by characters in Star Trek – something that actually works and isn’t just decorative. Well, a company called OnBeep has a product called Onyx that could fit the bill.

When I was a kid, I always wanted one of those communicators from Star Trek just so I could flip it open like they did on TV. I eventually got one of the toy ones, and when I grew up, I finally got a real communicator – when the cellphone came along.

After seeing countless movie characters and comic book protagonists with a wristwatch communicator, you’d think that being able to have one in real life is an appealing idea.

The modern-day replica offers up blinking lights and sounds just like the original Starfleet-issue communications gizmo.
