While most of us are off playing with our fancy new toys, it’s sometimes nice to dust off a game of Frogger, Pac-Man or Space Invaders and get your retro game on. While there are certainly ways to play these games on your PC, Mac or Linux box by downloading MAME, it’s kind of cool to see a standalone device capable of playing classic arcade games. The FPGA Arcade board will play numerous arcade games, as well as emulate platforms like the Atari ST and Amiga.

Video game emulators have long been available for both iOS and Android phones, provided you’re willing to jailbreak your device. There are NES, SNES and even PlayStation emulators. However, this is the first time that I’ve seen a Nintendo DS emulator for smartphones.

Proof that it’s still very much loved, a micro SD card adapter was recently made available for Sega’s last console. The adapter makes use of the Dreamcast’s serial port and comes with a boot disk, letting users run a plethora of emulators, homebrew games as well as play xvid video files and music.

If you go waaaaay back in the wayback machine to 1975, you might remember a little computer called the Altair 8800. Officially, it was the “world’s first personal computer,” running a speedy 8080 processor which could make the red lights on the front blink in and out of sequence among other things.

Ah, SNES emulation. It’s like a rite of passage for any jailbroken system powerful enough to run it. I’m sure that when the PS6 is hacked in 2040, people will still install an SNES emulator on it.

I don’t know a lot of kids, but I’m betting they’d prefer to play on the iPhone, Nintendo DS or PSP rather than the SNES or NES. If they even know what those two are. But I think there’s still a lot of us 80s kids that’ll find Chinavision’s all-in-one gadget a hoot.

Seriously, get one now if you’re a fan of the Virtual Boy. That’s a big if, but today I found out that there is a healthy, enthusiastic and eager Virtual Boy-loving community, and they are stoked about Richard Hutchinson‘s update to his first Virtual Boy dev kit.

Ben Heck chose to make his Bill Paxton pinball machine the old fashioned way, using actual flippers and tunnels and whatnot. But there’s also another, less complicated way to make a pinball machine – by running an emulator on a computer.

The latest Linux-based portable gaming console from Gamepark Holdings (the same guys who created the GP2X Wiz) has the unfortunate name “Caanoo”, which is not only difficult to spell, I have no idea how to pronounce it.

The latest in handheld emulators, the Letcool N350JP tries to one-up other portables by adding on something they don’t offer – a pair of external controllers for two-player fun. The compact system comes with emulators for the Super Nintendo, NES, Sega Genesis, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance, but if it’s anything like the other portable emulators out there, you can bet there will be more emulators, and probably a Linux build for it at some point.

SEGA today announced Genesis Ultimate Collection for the iPhone. The new app will provide a gateway for you to buy and play your favorite Genesis games, fully emulated to run just like the originals. The initial version of the app will come bundled with Space Harrier II, but then once you’re inside the collection, you’ll be able to add new games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin and Shining Force for starters.

Want to play all your favorite classic retro console games? Sure you could cheat and buy yourself a Dingoo, but what fun would that be? This custom-built portable uses hardware from a couple of other devices to create a system that plays games from the Nintendo NES, SNES and Sega Genesis.

The first time I saw an NES gaming system built into an NES cartridge, I thought it was pretty sweet. Until I saw this one, which totally outdoes the original. Nope, this portable gaming system is most definitely not a PSP Go. What you’re looking at here is a cheap Chinese handheld known as the PXP-2000. While the PXP-2000 won’t play any of your PSP games, it will play classic games from the NES, Famicom, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Super Famicom/SNES, and SEGA Megadrive/Genesis consoles.

This odd little handheld gaming system may look a heckuva lot like a Nintendo Game Boy Advance, but it’s actually one of those multi-system emulators that can play games from a variety of retro consoles. The mysteriously named SP2 handheld can play games from the original NES, Super Nintendo, Game Boy Color, Neo Geo and yes, the Game Boy Advance.

There are plenty of cheap plug-and-play SEGA retro gaming systems out there, but this is the first one I’ve seen that lets you load up your own ROMs and play them on your TV. The E-Time Game Play Controller ($22 USD) may look like a standalone game controller, but it’s actually a self-contained SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis console.
