Constructing A Fire Pit Out Of Solid, Clear Glass Bricks

Presumably, after hearing that I’m in the market for a new fire pit, Ben Uyeda of HomeMade Modern decided to experiment with building fire pits out of solid, transparent glass bricks. I love the aesthetic. Of course, it doesn’t take much to beat my old cinderblock fire pit, which my wife has frequently described as “A real eyesore.”

Having discovered solid glass bricks at a masonry supply yard, Ben started brainstorming what he could build with them. Note these are not the same hollow wavy glass privacy blocks that were popular in bathrooms 30 years ago, but SOLID glass. Now I want a hot tub made out of them.

Ben experiments with two different fire pit sizes to see which will keep the soot accumulation and the possibility of the bricks cracking due to heat stress to a minimum. After a night of testing, he discovered that a larger, lower-walled fire pit fared far better than a smaller, high-walled one at preventing brick-cracking and soot. I don’t think anybody will find that surprising. Well, except maybe the First Little Pig.
