Lars & Ivan Hybrid iPod Dock Amp: Just Add Speakers

by Paul Strauss

This unique iPod docking station combines a home for your media player with a powerful tube-based amplifier.

Lars & Ivan’s PA-40Ti Hybrid iPod Amp

Lars & Ivan’s PA-40Ti Hybrid iPod Amp

Unlike most iPod docking stereos, Lars & Ivan’s PA-40Ti Hybrid iPod Dock skips the built-in speakers, and instead gives you 40 watts of stereo amplification that can power speakers of your choosing. While your iPod gets a cozy place to sit, the dock provides charging, USB connectivity and video output. The amp has additional inputs for your other devices (RCA stereo only, no digital), and offers a pre-amp out for a subwoofer.

You can find the Lars & Ivan Hybrid iPod Dock at Belgium’s designgadgets for €233,00 (appx. $342 USD).

Excited as all get out, I just arived home with a newly purchased Lars & Ivan PA40Ti. I will be hooking a Clearaudio (emotion) turntable to it along with a Rotel CD player and a set of Vintage Klipsch Heresey II’s. (all Cardas wiring) I will give constructive critisism after some auditions. (Sarah McLachlan, Eva Cassidy, Lois Armstrong and Ray Montford). Cheers!

Along with a shocking reception from my little lady, the L&I PA40Ti sounds respectable for the dollars spent as it produces a sound stage comparable to any entry level tube amp at 3X the cost. Just the fact that it has a Phono output and a sub output to help deliver a warm tube sound, I feel as though I should set the rest of the family up with one of these systems. Seriously, 199.00 at London Drugs!!! Holy can I feel good about bragging this one up. No It’s not a serious audiophile high end sound reproduction acuracy, but a huge bang for the buck conversation piece that could fool the untrained ear for a better than average audio system. Great Job Apple!

      Thank You

Hey sorry it took so long for me to get back to this site. After hours of listening, The amp has a slight hum when first powered up. (normal as now a buddy has one and it is the same). After playing a CD or the Dock the hum goes away and the sound comes through clear and decent. The sound stage is surprisingly decent for the dollar. I have listened to a few albumns and am satisfied with the phono stage also. The sound quality in the room(12X13) with the equipment used is absolutely pleasing to the ears for this kind of money. Good highs and mids and with the sub slightly on, it sounds almost “high end”. Best 200 bones i’ve spent on audio in a long time. Cheers, Shane.
