When you tend to spend a lot of time reading with your Kindle out on the road or on vacation, it’s nice that it can run for so long. Still, it would be nice if you never had to plug it in at all. SolarFocus has just released information about their SolarKindle cover, which allows you to use the sun to power your Kindle for a whole lot longer, while at the same time protecting your Kindle.

Its makers state that with the cover in place and a reasonable amount of sunlight, you’ll be able to use your Kindle for three months straight before needing a regular recharge. The SolarKindle cover also comes with an LED lamp, to allow you late night reading. The lamp will be juiced up for 50 hours of continuous use.

The cover can also be recharged via USB, so it doubles as conventional battery in case there isn’t much sun around. Thanks to the Kindle’s minimal power requirements, an hour under the sun translates to 3 days of reading. The SolarKindle cover will retail for $79.99 when it’s launched.

Does something like this exist for the iPad 2? That would be great if I would never have to manually charge my iPad again!

  2. Varun says:

The good thing I liked about the above charger is that it also acts as a protector/cover. So it sounds like a better value for money (though $80 seems a bit on the high end for me)

The solar panels powering this solar cover are made by United Solar Ovonics {a.k.a. Uni-Solar}, a subsidiary of the Michigan company Energy Conversion Devices [ticker symbol ENER].

Great product. Never plug your Kindle in ever again. The sun’s energy is free! And clean!
