Aerogel Handbag Is Made From The World’s Lightest Material

He's disassembled countless appliances and managed to put a few back together, and one still works. The Air Swipe Bag from Parisian fashion brand Coperni is a handbag made in the same style as its popular Swipe bag, but out of aerogel, the world’s lightest known solid material. The bag weighs only 33 grams, roughly the weight of a slice of bread. That’s light. My wife’s bag? I can barely lift it! Granted, it’s actually full…of mysteries.

Aerogel is made from a gel in which the liquid component has been replaced with gas. This particular bag’s composition is approximately 99% air and 1% glass, which explains its light weight. And not only is it light, but “it can support up to 4,000 times its own weight and withstand temperatures up to 2,200° Fahrenheit.” Granted, I’m not sure a handbag needs those features, but full disclosure: I know very little about handbags.

Aerogel costs around $23,000 per pound to produce, which means each bag uses approximately $1,675 of aerogel. And considering Coperni’s leather Swipe bags cost $700+, I imagine this must be a VERY costly handbag. I must have one.
