When it comes to headphones, I am particular, but not necessarily about the audio quality. I’m not an audiophile, but I’m very critical about the way they fit. Most over-the-ear headphones that I’ve used have cushions too small to fit over my ears and they end up sitting on my ears. In short order that makes the headphones uncomfortable for me.
At the same time I don’t like massive earcups that take up the entire side of your head. The JBL E55BT headphones were a perfect solution for me. The earcups are large enough that they don’t sit on my ears, but not so large that I feel like I am wearing Princess Leia buns either.
The lack of wires was fantastic though since that means I can put my phone in my pocket or in my backpack while hiking and listen all I want. Wireless range outdoors is about 30 feet. Not that I expected that signal to work indoors with the source outside, but I did once forget my phone was in my backpack in the trunk, and walked into a gas station for a drink. I got a good 30 feet from my car and into the store before the music cut out when the door closed behind me.
As for sound, I compared these headphones to my daughter’s Beats headphones that cost about the same as the JBL’s $150 price tag. Compared to the Beats headphones, the JBL E55BT definitely have less bass, and sounded a little less dynamic to me. Like I said, I’m no audiophile, and I’m all about comfort and fit.
Battery life is very good. JBL promises 20 hours of wireless use per charge. One of the things that I really like about the E55BT is that they do come with a removable 3.5mm cable which allows you to keep using the headphones if the battery should run out.
They also sync with your phone and you can use them for making phone calls. They work very well for that use. I wore them for over an hour during a conference call meeting for my day job and I never had to strain to hear the others on the line, and they could all hear me without any issues. I did use them in wired mode for that call, though.
The headphones come in black, blue, red, white, and green. The green is a seafoam green color and looks feminine to me, but still very cool. I’d have preferred anything other than that color, but my daughter went nuts for the shade and confiscated the headphones in short order. She spent more time wearing them than I did, and used them when we hiked or biked for weeks.
The JBL E55BT headphones sell for $149.95(USD) a pair and if you want a set of comfortable wireless headphones these are perfect.
