The folks at TrustedReviews have learned that the Playstation 3 will require a special adapter in order to load saved games from PS1/PS2 memory cards. This quote is pulled directly from Sony’s Website:
To use saved data on a PlayStation 2 memory card, you must copy the data onto a virtual memory card within the hard disk. This requires a PS2/PSone memory card adaptor to copy the data to your PLAYSTATION 3. A memory card adaptor is designed to edit, up/download game saves to and from EMS flash card or smart media card

What’s truly stupid is that the 60GB edition of the PS3 is supposed to have memory card slots onboard, but they didn’t bother to include a slot for PS2 or PSOne cards.
