Microsoft has just posted the product page for the forthcoming add-on HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360. No new details have been revealed at this point, but here’s hoping it’s an indication that the device is likely to be released soon.

The drive is widely anticipated to retail for under $200, which would provide what could be the most cost-effective path to high definition DVD playback. That said, it’s likely that the player will only support Component output (vs. HDMI) due to limitations of the 360’s hardware. Regardless, true 1080i and 720p output should blow away conventional DVD quality.

With talks of the major studios dropping exclusive distribution of HD-DVD and supporting Sony’s Bluray format the investment in this XBOX 360 drive doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Unless you looking to watch mainly HD porn which the adult industry is forced to use.
