Sony PS3 Ad Thanks Michael, Features an All-star Cast
October 5th, 2011
You have to admire Sony’s advertising department. They come up with sometimes bizarre and sometimes cool ads, but they are always innovative. This one is completely geek-tastic.
In this video, an all-star cast of PS3 game characters get together for a few drinks (or maybe it’s just their weekly meetup), shoot the breeze and raise a toast to “Michael”, the kid who controls them all on their adventures.
To Michael? What about me? I’ve played so many hours of PS3 games I’m pretty sure they have a plaque somewhere with my name on it, where they gather and laugh while counting their money. I’m pretty sure I bought Kevin Butler a new Yacht last year. F Michael!
Still though, this is an awesome ad. I’d like to see more like this. But seriously, F Michael. I’d kick his ass in CoD or Killzone.

I seriously can’t stop watching this! I even had my fiance’s 3 kids watch it and they were freaking out. They even pointed out a few characters that I didn’t notice the first 5 times a watched it, like Phoenix from Tekken. One of them even recognized the Sweet Tooth bell music when the soldiers first walk into the building. Freaking kids, man.
Also, lol at F Michael.
I think it would have been awesome if they hailed Kevin Butler, and put up lots of smug pictures of him instead. But yeah, it’s one of the best gaming ads ever.
I saw this ad and i really loved it, good job sony.
Hey, I Have to agree with you on the Sony Commercial Being Awesome, But come on man, have some respect.
Michael was PS3′s Forum Biggest Fan…
He died of cancer a few days ago.
Also, They used the name “Michael” in Memory of him, but it represents all the gamers, it shows that without the gamers, the characters wouldn’t exist. Sony is showing respect to players all over the world, and gaming in general.
Didn’t know that Michael was a real person – no offense intended.
finally someone else understands the commercial! thank you sam for not asking whos michael. or i dont even know michael. michael represents all gamers. if your name if jim there referring to you. they just used micahel because he was well known and a huge fan. but yes michael refers to anyone playing a ps3 and thank you again sam for understanding.
Ahhhh Michael…he is so tough, so… wait – who in the blue blazin’ is Michael!?! I know alot of Michael but they are XB360 little snots who think they are Zues’ gift to gaming! And I know some Mikey’s who rock around on DS. All the Michael I know are Dicks…nah wait… Richards and they are exclusive to Gameboy or the original XBOX. Now there are some gentlemen Mike’s, but they are few and rare and are hardly seen during the day, except for Michael Solo, the bully who terrorized me in school, but he’s in Whaley Ave Jail with Butchie for a cell mate. I will find out who this Michael, in the meantime… Playstation… iy does everything (except VHS).
No offense meabt against Michael, the guy that died… did not see a date and did not know he was a real person.
TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE
LIST THE CHARACTERS!!!
dont be stupid a 5 year old could name all the characters.
Everybody who plays PS3 IS A “MICHAEL”! The commercial represented all players, male and female. It was for you.
Oh, i thought Michael was like, some PS3 veteran that died or something with nothing but the entire collection of ps3 games available before his death. So I thought this was like, a dedication to the “great PS player known to the PSN” like apple and Steve Jobs.
Lol, but, it seems like i was completely wrong. In a way, all though characters represents the characters from the game saved files in THAT SPECIFIC PERSONS PS3, and not what i thought. Right?
Yes. You seem to have captured the depth of the Michael tribute.
I can only guess that the director and writers wanted to add an air of intimacy to the commercial, paying homage to the late Michael, as it were. So yes, exactly what you said; The characters are representatives of the specific saved game files in Michael’s PS3 hard drive. Hell of a commercial. Anyone know where I can find information on the non-animated stand in for Nathan Drake?
