This is JBL’s first iPad speaker and it looks pretty cool, but isn’t exactly the most forward thinking in terms of technical features. It’s compatible with most iDevices, from iPods to iPhones. It’s clear though that it has been made to accommodate the iPad first and foremost.
Naturally, it also has normal 3.5mm auxiliary and USB jacks, so that it’s compatible with all MP3 players. It can also charge the docked iOS devices. It’s got 4W of power per channel, coursing through a pair of JBL’s Phoenix transducers. The OnBeat also comes with an IR remote that works from up to 15 feet away.
The OnBeat will be able to stream video from your iOS device directly to your TV a composite cable (so don’t expect HD video). I am a bit surprised that it has no AirPlay features, which is what you’d expect for a dock in this price range these days.
It’s definitely an interesting looking dock for your iPad if you use that device for media playback a lot, assuming you don’t care about HD video or wireless audio playback. It will ship next month and will cost $149.95 (USD) at Apple Stores and Best Buy stores.
