Wilson Unveils Airless Basketball Prototype

Because innovation is everywhere, sports manufacturer Wilson recently unveiled its 3D Airless Basketball prototype, a new basketball created as near to the specifications of its official game-used NBA balls but with no air. Or leather. Or the same aerodynamics since it’s filled with holes.

Per Wilson Team Sports General Manager Kevin Murphy, “We are so proud to unveil Wilson’s 3D Airless Prototype basketball as a physical manifestation of our continued commitment to sports innovation. This is just one example of how our team approaches the game and why we are the number one basketball company in the world today.” Sure, but it can’t hurt being the NBA’s official ball sponsor, either.

The ball was recently used by Houston Rockets small forward Kenyon Martin Jr. during the first round of the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest, which can be seen in the video above. So, will this 3D-printed ball ever replace the traditional ones seen on the court? Maybe. Of course, by then, we’ll have bigger problems to worry about besides what kind of ball they’re using in sports. Stuff like where to hide from the robots and why canned breathing air is so expensive.
