LEGO Great Ball Contraption: The Best Useless Thing You’ll Ever See

by Lambert Varias

We’ve featured LEGO mad scientist akiyuki and his Great Ball Contraption before, but the updated version of his machine is too awesome not too share. The machine is about 101 feet long and shuffles 500 balls around. It took akiyuki a total of 600 hours to finish this machine.

Nope, that’s just a third of the whole thing. You’ll have to watch the video below to see all of its parts:

The basketball area is amazing and hilarious. The arms are so accurate, but I can’t help imagining them in a real factory, shooting packages through a hoop.

Have you heard of the future? There’s no Flash in it.

    • Technabob says:

And what Flash do you speak of? If you’re talking about the ads, they’re not really in our control. The video should be loading as HTML5 if your browser supports it.

    Very Very Cool!

Must have taken a lot of tuning to get the inflow/outflow rates matched up. Everything looked pretty well managed with not too many “bottlenecks”

How many lego sets did it use? Was there any mindstorms involved? or it all just mechanically rate managed?

    • I actually don’t know that much about Mindstorms but at around 6:25 into the video you’ll see that there are two Mindstorms control units attached to the large crane. I also think that there are several Mindstorms sensors attached throughout the whole machine, but again I’m not 100% sure about it.
